(Jennifer talking with residents of skid row in downtown Los Angeles)
I was raised in a foster home in Taiwan by Buddhists; but as a child, I attended a church near my home and remember loving hearing stories about Jesus. When I was older, I moved to the United States but tough circumstances followed me and I ended up being incarcerated in an LA County jail. I see this as a blessing now because God removed me from my crazy life and set me in a quiet place – jail—to humble and equip me. At first I rejected God’s word, which a chaplain often shared with me. Yet, once I began reading the Bible for myself, I couldn’t put it down. I was thirsty for knowledge of the Word and wanted to learn how to be an effective witness of God’s grace. I was determined to attend The Urban Ministry Institute once I was released. Within the first month after I got out, I attended my first TUMI class!
TUMI’s teaching has helped me discover my gifts and stirred within me a passion to help others. I’ve been called to serve and be a witness of God’s grace to the poor, and I’m currently involved in a ministry that serves food on downtown’s skid row. I naturally share all I know about Jesus with the men and women standing in line waiting to be fed, but I’m eager to learn and share more! I truly believe that I’ve benefited dramatically from TUMI’s training and teaching.
