Finding transportation is sometimes a challenge for TUMI students. They come to class by car pool, by bus, on foot, and in one student’s case—by bicycle. T’Essa is in her final year as a TUMI student and is scheduled to graduate in 2014. T’Essa began taking TUMI classes while a resident of the Union Rescue Mission located in downtown Los Angeles. Since classes were available there only on a limited basis, she accelerated her progress toward the TUMI certificate by attending additional classes at our TUMI-LA Main Campus location. For nearly two years now—summer, winter, spring, and fall—T’Essa has ridden her bike on the seven mile round trip through the darkened streets of Los Angeles to attend our evening classes. That’s dedication!

Because to her consistent dedication to her studies, T'Essa graduated with high honors and on-time in 2014 (as she previously planned) with a Certificte in Christian Leadership Studies. T'Essa is the first female student to graduate from TUMI-LA while also a resident at the Union Rescue Mission. During her graduation, she was given the opportunity to share about her time at TUMI. This is one quote from her graduation address:
TUMI classeshave helped train me, because that’s what God does with us, He trains us. He is training me to fight for justice and righteousness. He’s training me to be a soldier, to work for Him as a soldier in the army of the Lord. TUMI is part of that training - equipping me, preparing me, and helping me to be more effective when I go out and witness to others. It has helped me to know how to walk alongside others who become disciples, to help others seek God, to plant churches…whatever needs to be done, He’s equipped me to do that task through TUMI. I really appreciate this Institute because I’ve learned so much more than I ever thought possible. I had a hunger in my spirit for knowing more about God and knowing more about His Word, and TUMI has helped me accomplish that goal. I want to give back and help others so that they too can be faithful witnesses for Christ here in the city.
